Sir,
Under the initiative of our visionary board,
ONGC has recently implemented various new IT projects in the
areas of creation of IT infrastructure and integrated applications.
One such initiative is Project ICE - Information Consolidation
for Efficiency. Through this initiative all the business process
of ONGC have been integrated electronically through a single
ERP platform. Project ICE is one of the largest ERP implementations
in Asia, considering its spread across all geographical locations
of ONGC, in number of users which is about 13,000 plus presently,
the number of SAP modules deployed and the man months of efforts
that have gone in.
The project was implemented by a joint team
of ONGC and SAP India. The ONGC team was consisting mostly
of middle managers from all the functional disciplines of
ONGC i.e., E&T, Engineering, Finance, Costing, Drilling,
Production, Technical services etc. The experience in implementing
this Project has given this team a tremendous insight into
understanding the business complexities of India’s largest
E&P Company, and the integration aspects of business where
every business function has an impact in physical and financial
terms on every other function. This team has also implemented
certain high end add-on SAP modules such as Asset Life Cycle
Costing Module, Strategic Enterprise Management and Portal
based operational analytics, analytics through Business Warehouse
and E- procurement etc., many of which were being done for
first time in the country.
The job is still not over. We need to plan
for improvement in the system, develop this system as the
main tool for MIS, data analysis and long term planning.
Sir, it is felt that this vast knowledge
and experience that has developed over the period of two –
three years would go waste if not utilized gainfully. Today
most of the members of the team are most sought after as consultants
in the country for implementation of ERP practice. If an initiative
to utilize this manpower gainfully is not put in place, the
knowledge gained would wither away if the team is disbanded.
It is felt that this experience gained by
this team can be gainfully utilized not only by ONGC for its
expansion plans such as in downstream and retailing activities,
overseas implementations for OVL, sister concern MRPL etc.,
but also may be made available to other E&P companies
elsewhere in India or abroad.
It is requested that we be given
an opportunity to make a presentation to you and share our
vision for utilizing this knowledge base that has developed
during the last three years.
With warm regards.
Yours ,
(Amit Kumar)
